It’s like Christmas in December

I was a fair bit off in my fried clam estimate the other day – it was more like thirty clams on the clam plate today, which was the same US$28 as last time at J.T. Farnham’s. The total was $72 for that plus the lobster roll and quart of seafood chowder that I brought home – four meals in all.

It was strange to see ice on the salt marsh and 29°F/-2°C on the outside thermometer, but the food was no less delicious than on a hot night in July.

A more traditional view from one of the picnic tables at Farnham’s in May 2014:

I added a link to a 2008 behind-the-scenes video at the end the post. It’s got Guy Fieri in it, but other than that it’s the better of several videos you can find that show the workings of the place and the owners.

This recent article on fried clam joints ends the way I expected it to. His rankings duplicate the results when an old boss & I taste-tested Woodman’s, Farnham’s, and Clam Box of Ipswich after our annual user conference in Gloucester – a one-time deviation from the usual York – wrapped several years ago.

I don’t agree with his disappointment in the onion rings and fries, though. I think they’re very good, but you do usually need to add a sprinkle of salt. I do agree on the tartar sauce, which is why I either make and bring my own or, like today, grab a bottle of Inglehoffer’s before visiting. I also brought a thermos of half Luzianne iced tea and half freshly-squeezed lemon-limeade – sort of an Arnold Palmer, but with lime, too.
