Hey, cool site redesign, Sprint

After not answering an unfamiliar caller ID on my mobile just now, I found it was a survey company, so I visited the Sprint site to forever block the number and, on arrival, found they have a rather unfetching new design. I’ve had my desktop browser windows set at 1024×768 for years because that’s the way I like it. Sprint does not care for my preference, so much so that they’re willing to make their site close to indecipherable at that size to show me the error of my foolish and ignorant ways:

Boneheads.

I suppose I could offer offer to do everything for everybody in order to get everything done well, but I fear that might severely eat into my sleep time.

If you think that’s bad, try living at 800×600.

The one and only web site I ever set up (and still manage) was over 6 years ago. It was intended to fit nicely for 800×600 viewers, still common then. Those dimensions look ridiculously small in width on my 1920×1080 monitor today, but the pages are very readable; and the form fill-in page, which was a bit long to fit 600 height, is a perfect fit nowadays. “If it ain’t broke, why fix it?”

Hey thanks for the feedback. I’m actually working on that project. Would love to know if you perhaps had your browser font zoom up a notch? The page is responsive and should scale beautifully across all screen sizes (including 800×600) 😉 . We have made some style changes and it is possible there was an older CSS file out there that didnt’ handle font scaling well when you saw it.

We’re doing a phased rollout to do user testing, gather feedback, etc, and not everyone visiting the site will see it the new design. Appreciate your input though!

Under the assumption that you’re not pulling my leg, I’m going to answer seriously. If you are pulling my leg, my own usually carefully concealed boneheadedness will be revealed.

I can’t remember the last time I zoomed in Firefox – I’m at 37.0.1, by the way – but that was nonetheless the first thing I checked:

When Oedivale replied on the 11th, a week after my post, I went back to Sprint out of curiosity to see if anything had been fixed, and the home page did correctly display the menu bar without scroll bars around it and without a horizontal scroll bar for the entire page:

However, post-login, the account landing page still has the same problems – scroll bars around the menu bar on the left, menu text vertically truncated, and a horizontal scroll bar for the page itself. The same misbehaviour seems to be true of other pages that include that menu bar – Shop, My Sprint –> Preferences, and the like:

Now I wonder whether I’ll be hearing from Air Canada’s antisocial media rep about my Halifax posts: “Look, mister, I swear they told me the fool thing slid off the runway, not onto it!”

Ha yes I’m for real, and thanks for the detailed explanations. Sorry for not replying sooner, I didn’t get an email notification of your comment.

Your experience matches what I would expect to see given some of the bugs we fixed on the homepage after the initial rollout. The nav on the signed-in pages is being added to the page in a different way while we do some testing and so the differences you’re seeing there make sense to me based on what I know is happening there (although I agree its not a great experience). The latest code should have those issues cleaned up too, although it isn’t in production yet. If you have other thoughts feel free to email me or look me up on LinkedIn.
